The scientific activity around the theoretical and numerical physics in Grenoble involves a community of about 80 researchers, working in most of the cases in small teams (4-5 persons). This community is spread over about fifteen laboratories, located at the campus of the university, in the city, and at the polygone scientifique « Louis Néel ». The concerned organizations are the Université Joseph Fourier (UJF), the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG), the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique (CEA), and the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique (CNRS).
The research activity in theoretical physics covers the following main axes (per alphabetical ordering) : astrophysics, condensed matter, diluted media and/or fluids, mathematical physics, nonlinear physics, nuclear physics, particle-physics/high energies/astro-particles, soft matter, theoretical chemistry. Although these axes are very diverse, one can identify technics and transverse themes laying on several communities as for example the fields theory, the Monte Carlo methods, the noise and the dynamics or the systems with a few number of constituents.
The Grenoble community of theorists is very interested in activities rallying several teams and communities as proves the existence at the present time of work groups involving physicists and mathematicians, of a pole theoretical chemistry (chemists - astrophysicists - mathematicians), of a theory seminar in condensed matter as well as several workshops and transverse thematic journeys that took place these last years. However, the scientific animation in the theorists community meets difficulties due to the delocalization of teams and to the geographical separation university campus - city - polygon « Louis Néel ». The most obvious problem is the impossibility to rally partly and/or temporarily without any infrastructure (office, PC …).
To supply to these needs, the "Laboratoire de Physique et Modélisation en Matière Condensée" (LPMMC – UMR 5493) and several Grenoble teams of theoretical physics lead a project named « Centre Théorique pour la Physique Grenobloise » (CTPG) [in english : Theoretical Center for the Physics in Grenoble] since the spring 2004. This projet aims at increasing the visibility of the Grenoble theorists : between them, with respect to the experimentalist colleagues, with respect to the scientific organizations, as well as on the national and international points of view. The CTPG proposes a local, national and international scientific animation, through a well-adapted - light and flexible - infrastructure.
